18-month Disciplinary suspension of historian and researcher Julien Théry over public statements on Palestine

On 24 June 2026, Université Lumière Lyon 2 imposed an 18-month suspension without pay on historian Julien Théry following disciplinary proceedings. Although Théry had been publicly accused of antisemitism, the university's disciplinary decision was based on the finding that his public interventions had harmed the institution's image and functioning, rather than on any finding of antisemitic conduct.

The proceedings concerned Julien Théry's personal activity on social media and his participation in left-wing media outlets, where he had publicly expressed support for Palestinian rights. The university did not challenge the content of his teaching or research, and the alleged conduct did not occur within the exercise of his academic duties. Critics of the decision also noted that the university had previously refused Julien Théry legal protection on the grounds that the disputed statements fell outside his professional responsibilities, while nevertheless pursuing disciplinary sanctions through internal procedures.

The sanction prompted criticism from academics and public figures, who argued that it represented a disproportionate disciplinary response to political expression and reflected growing external political pressure on universities. They called for the decision to be overturned, warning that it could undermine academic freedom and discourage university staff from expressing views on matters of public interest, including Palestine.
